Bouchard Finlayson
This month we follow the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Path, traversing the Hottentots-Holland mountain range and head for Hemel en Aarde Valley (Heaven and Earth Valley) just outside of the seaside resort of Hermanus.
The Hemel en Aarde Valley is not only spectacularly beautiful, enfolded by the Babylonstoring and Raed Na Gael mountains, but is home to some of South Africa’s top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The common denominator amongst wine makers in this region, is their commitment to quality wines through their knowledge of the local terroir. No where is this more pronounced that our featured winery Bouchard Finlayson.
Bouchard Finlayson is renowned for producing top class Pinot Noir. Pinot grapes are notoriously fickle and consistency of quality can be a problem but fastidious attention to detail through all facets of the wine making process has ensured that Bouchard Finlayson do not suffer inconsistencies. Growing on the slopes of Galpin Peak, repeated vintages of this path blazing wine continue to reflect a true celebration of Pinot crafting.
Peter Finlayson was the first modern day wine maker in this Valley and has been instrumental in putting this area well and truly on the ‘wine map’. Whilst his winery is ‘new world’, his viticultural practices remain ‘old world’. This combination has resulted in rave reviews both in South Africa and overseas where his wines are fast attaining ‘cult’ status.
During the summer months the winery is open Monday to Friday 0930 to 1700 and on Saturdays 0930 to 1230 for tastings and sales. Large groups are requested to book in advance.
